Steve Sisolak was born the day after Christmas, 1953 to Mary and Edward Sisolak. Steve, his older brother Edward and his younger sister Susan all grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Steve was active in Wauwatosa West High School, serving on the student council and participating in the National Honor Society. He lettered in basketball, and played football, track and golf, which he still enjoys today.
After graduating in 1972, Steve enrolled at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee. Even though he worked full time, Steve graduated in two and a half years with a degree in Marketing in the fall of 1974. After graduation, he moved to Las Vegas to continue his studies.
Steve enrolled at UNLV School of Business in the fall of 1976. Steve worked hard in school and explored Southern Nevada. He liked the town, and was optimistic about the business climate. After graduating with a Masters Degree in Business Administration, he took a job here in Clark County and, within two years, started two businesses of his own.
Steve built his two businesses and created hundreds of jobs for his employees here in Southern Nevada. One of his businesses produced custom and printed advertising products sold exclusively to other businesses nationwide. His second business, which he owned and operated at the same time, provided premiums and gifts for businesses to use in their promotions. If your insurance agent ever sent you an imprinted calendar, if your bank ever gave you a ball point pen with their logo on it, or if you ever received a free coffee mug from your favorite local dining place, you may have received a product marketed and sold by one of Steve Sisolak’s two companies. His experience as a business owner taught him how to manage a budget, cut waste, and deliver service to his customers. And Steve also learned the importance of staying active in his community.
In 1989, Steve’s daughter Ashley was born. His other daughter, Carley, followed in 1991. Steve has always been active in his daughter’s lives, attending all the PTA meetings and coaching their sports teams. When Steve and his wife decided to divorce in 2001, the girls continued to live with him.
In 1998, Steve strengthened his commitment to public service by running for, and being elected to, a seat on the Board of Regents. Steve has always been a strong supporter of public education, and public universities in particular. A graduate of UNLV himself, he knew that the Board needed strong direction. Steve used his skills as a business leader and a mediator to build bridges within this group of smart and opinionated people. It hasn’t always been easy, but the most rewarding things never are. Both his daughters followed their dad to UNLV. 19 year old Ashley will be a junior this fall, and 16 year old Carley will enter the freshman class.
Steve decided in 2005 to sell his businesses and become a business consultant. He continued his work on the Board of Regents and with local charities. He has always found time to support community organizations. He’s never been afraid to roll up his sleeves and get involved. Steve has worked with the many groups, including the Boys and Girls Club, and the American Red Cross, the Rape Crisis Center and the Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth.
Although Steve hasn’t sought the limelight for his work, he was awarded the Rape Crisis Center 2006 Above and Beyond Award, the Mutual of America 2007 Community Partnership Award, the 2001 Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada Businessman of the Year and the 2007 Humanitarian of the Year—Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth.
Now in 2008, Steve Sisolak is running for County Commission because he knows he can use his skills as a businessman, community leader and mediator to improve Clark County. During the next few months, you will have a chance to meet Steve, size him up, and hear what he has to say. We think you’ll agree—Steve Sisolak has the experience to do a great job representing us on the County Commission.
